The first anti-war protest organised by the Stop the War Alliance at Eleftheria Sq. in Nicosia was a very good and successful start. It was a colourful event with more than 150 people, among them students, teachers, guest workers and people from the Arab and Palestinian community. Children were painting on canvass; a band of high school students performed with antiwar songs and music. Just before the event started, a delegation from the Pancyprian Peace Council (a front organization of AKEL) which organized the 5.000 strong Peace march on Episkopi Garrison last September, came to Eleftheria square and signed the declaration, giving officially its support to the Stop the War Alliance.
Within two hours 275 signatures were collected and CP£332. The event ended with around 100 protesters marching through Makarios Avenue with slogans against the war on Iraq and against the Cyprus government involvement in providing concessions like the use of Cyprus’s airspace and territory to British and American military machine.
The protest on Saturday in Nicosia was staged in solidarity with the antiwar demonstrations in US where thousands demonstrated in San Fransisco and Washington, in Tokyo, Paris, London, Rome, Moscow, Beirut, Damascus, and Cairo and in many other cities in the world.
The next event will be on Saturday 1 Feb 03. The Stop the War Alliance calls a demonstration at the US Embassy - 11:30 a.m: Assemble at 11 a.m. at Eleftheria Square and march on the US Embassy. We should all come out and bring our friends and demonstrate against US attack on Iraq.
