The British bases in Akrotiri decided to go ahead and start testing the giant Pluto antenna while they are expecting to put it into operation by the end of the year.
The antenna comprises a huge spy installation, part of a world system of monitoring and guiding missiles, aiming at the countries of the Middle East region and farther away. It will be a menace to the health of the people in the area due to the emission of electromagnetic radiation, which may cause various forms of cancer. It will have also disastrous impact on the Akrotiri Wetland, one of the most important ecosystems of the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Cyprus Government, while it declares its opposition against the installation of the antenna, refuses to take any steps against the decision of the British Authorities. The Government invokes the Treaty of Establishment and its obligations stemming from it that "it cannot afford not to respect". Does the Treaty though allow the British imperialists - in defiance of the people's sentiments - to threaten the health of the people and the environment of the island and does it permit them to spy the peoples and the anti-imperialist movements of the region?
We call everyone to join in the protest march against the antenna in Akrotiri on SUNDAY 9 NOVEMBER at 11:00 a.m.
Among the organizations supporting the mobilization are: the Green Party of Cyprus, Workers Democracy, the Socialist Party of Cyprus (Kibris Sosyalist Partisi), the Youth of Patriotic Unity Movement (Yurtseverler Birligi Hareketi), Baraka Cultural Center (Baraka Kültür Merkezi), Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot activists.
There will be one coach leaving from Ledra Palace on Sunday at 9:00a.m. and one from the Cyprus Handicraft Center (Athalassa Aven.) at 9.30 a.m.
